LOTUS PARK

The Density Syndicate in Cape Town, Organized by the International New Town Institute and the African Centre for Cities, was a great experience. With an integral team, experts all with a different expertise, we worked on an inclusive and incremental upgrading approach for Lotus Park in Cape Town. The final result was an incremental approach for the densification and upgrading of the houses, using a combination of the RDP principle and community DIY. With the different typologies the small existing blocks of informal dwellings could be transformed into high quality, high density neighborhoods.

The  team also came up with new economic opportunities that could benefit the community financially, but would also improve the quality of the neighborhood. Two of the ideas are  to clean the river water by using tilapia fish and to locally produce biogas by collecting the sewage locally. Both solutions would generate economic opportunities for the community, making them more independent, self-sufficient and sustainable.
